Now, on a not-quite-unrelated note, if you swivel your eyes to the right of this column and take a peek at Where in the World Are the Redheads?, you’ll note that Miss Laurel has a few gigs coming up. This weekend she’s got a solo concert with Tex Arnold at the Tusten Theatre in upstate NY. Come June, she’ll be reuniting with Lauren Kinhan and Janis Siegel aka JaLaLa, for gigs at Albany’s Egg and NYC’s Birdland (in case you’re wondering, their musical influences are the Boswell Sisters, and the Ronettes). We’ve decided to give away a free ticket to the Birdland date. All you have to do to enter the fray is post a comment here about who your influences have been, musical or otherwise. Tell us who you admire and why, and the entry that inspires us the most will get the tic. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

I want to win the Birdland ticket and bring my husband to the show!
My musical influences are: The Beatles, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Donovan, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Boswell Sisters, Vivaldi, Bach, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and Manhattan Transfer. I LOVE to sing and write songs and perform and record. I have been doing it since the '70s and don't plan to stop soon. See you at Birdland.
Love and blessings,

Shirley Horn is probably my favorite pianist/singer of all time, because she can perform ballads at extremely slow tempos and yet make the musical and lyrical line move through long stretches of space. She knows how to accompany herself and how to have her singing affect her piano playing and her piano playing affect her singing.
Elis Regina is another favorite singer because her music is like sung emotion. It is impossible to for me to hear her and not be moved.
Not famous, but I appreciate the opportunity to thank Larry Gates, who opened my eyes and ears to playing different styles authentically instead of imposing one on all. Thanks also to Michael Patrick King, who showed me the difference between funny and clever; Bonnie Loren, for teaching the accompanist as much as the singers about making a song a story; and my mother, who left the radio on the right stations.
